Options range from foods that are simply low in carbohydrates to begin with, to foods that are specially created with small amounts carbohydrates in mind.

One example of low carb fast food comes from Subway. For years, Subway has marketed itself as a health-oriented fast food restaurant, and its new low carb wraps continue that trend. In December 2003, Subway reached a licensing agreement with Atkins Nutritionals, Inc., allowing Subway to offer Atkins-friendly wraps in stores nationwide.

Special wheat and soy grains are used to make the new low carb wraps, which are high in fiber and protein. Additionally, the new wraps contain approximately two-thirds less carbohydrates than Subway’s regular 6-inch sub sandwiches, and they will cost customers about 50 cents more.

There are currently two low carb wraps at Subway right now, and the number of carbs varies from source to source. The first is the chicken bacon ranch, with approximately eight grams of net carbs. There is also the turkey and bacon melt. This has a bit more net carbohydrates. There are about 10 net carbs in the turkey bacon melt, but it’s still low enough to easily fit into your low carb diet.

In addition to the low carb wraps, many of the nation’s biggest burger joints are getting on the low carb fast food craze with their own low carb options. Some of the options are new menu items, while others are modified items already on the menu.

One of the best ways to modify menu items is to lose the unnecessary condiments. Many people do not realize the high amounts of fat and calories in mayonnaise, dressings and other sauces. Even ketchup, which is relatively high in sugar, should be minimized or cut out entirely to eliminate those empty carbohydrates.

Burger King will also expand its menu with low carb fast food items aimed at those on the infamous Atkins’ and other low carb diets. The menu changes are similar to those made by McDonald’s. One of the more significant changes is the inclusion of meal-sized salads, which tend to be much lower in carbohydrates and much healthier altogether than traditional fast food items.

Burger King also markets its Whopper as a low carb option when ordered without the bun, which is something that has become quite popular. Fast food chains such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. offer bunless burgers. These burgers are served either as a platter with a fork and knife or with large leaves of lettuce in place of the bun.

Along with modifying existing menu items and creating new ones, fast food restaurants are beginning to offer more nutritional information about their foods. Restaurants are also considering putting some information right on the menus. The more information that is made available, the better educated consumers can be in making dietary choices. With these new menu items and more information at their fingertips, dieters can turn greasy, fatty fast food into healthy, low carb fast food.
Fast Food Statistics

FAST FOOD NO NO'S

FAST FOOD NO NO'S

Fast Food Statistics
We all eat fast food at one time or another during the month. Some more than others, but most everyone eats fast food at least once a month. If you don't eat fast food it has to be a full blown boycott on it, because the fast food companies make it so convenient to eat. It seems like everywhere we go fast food chains are offering fresh, hot, tasty food for the price of a few dollars, or less. It is not easy to stay slim eating fast food unless you have a movie star metabolism, however it is possible to limit the damage the food does to you by making smart selections when you choose to indulge your hunger with fast food.

One great way to make smart choices on where to eat, and what to get, is to do a little homework. You don't need to be a nutritionist to discover that one fast food chain has double the sodium in their French fries then the competition's French fry sodium levels. Just doing research like this can literally cut your sodium intake in half for the day. You can take the sodium example, and apply it to calories, cholesterol, and any other ingredient that you prefer. Most fast food chains offer nutritional charts on their websites that will help guide you to this pertinent information.

If time does not allot for a sit down with the nutritional menu at your favorite fast food restaurant, then go with this general rule of thumb: less is more. If you have less food at a fast food restaurant, you will have more health benefits for it. If you eat larger quantities of food you will definitely be worse off then if you'd just had half of what you ordered.

Also, take advantage of the new lower calorie choices which most all of the fast food restaurants are now offering. Most of them have some form of salad with a lite or reduced calorie salad dressing available. Many of them also have other choices such as fruit cups or baked potatoes (watch out for the butter and sour cream) which can be substituted for French fries.

Many of the fast food restaurants are now offering grilled chicken where they only had fried chicken in the past. By choosing grilled instead of fried, you can still get a fast food sandwich with most of the trimmings (you may want to leave off the mayonnaise or heavy sauce) and still stay in the healthy zone.

Another idea is to get your sandwich and when it comes, don't eat the bread or bun. You might want to do this especially if the bread has been smeared with a lot of mayonnaise or has had butter spread on it and "toasted". Both of these have probably trippled the calorie value of the bread.

And...a really big one is even though the fast food restaurant advertises and the clerk does his or her best to push you, don't "super size" your meal. It may seem like a better value, but in the long run while you may be paying less money for your food, you are paying a much greater price with your health. More of a good thing is good, but more of a bad thing is just bad!

Here's one more hint which will help you eat healthier when buying your food at a fast food restaurant. That's not eating in your car. I know, I'm guilty of it myself and I know I shouldn't do it. But sometimes I'm just in a hurry and don't have time to either go into the restaurant and sit and eat or take it back to my office or home.

It seems that when I eat in my car, it is easier just to eat whatever I ordered as fast as I can so I can be on my way. Heck, sometimes I eat while I'm driving. It's just not good practice to do this. Because you are in a cramped area as well as being pressed for time, you can spill some of the food or beverage on yourself. Also, it's hard to just eat the meat and veggies out of your sandwich and trying to balance a baked potato is really ridiculous. So what do you do...you know, you opt for the high calorie, high sodium, high fat meal and eat it as quickly as possible and hightail it out of there.

Fast Food Statistics

6 Negative Effects Of Eating Fast Food

6 Negative Effects Of Eating Fast Food
Fast Food Statistics
1. Fast food has a very high energy density. About 65 percent higher than a typical diet and twice as high as recommended healthy diets which makes us eat more than we otherwise would. Energy density refers to the amount of calories an item of food contains in relation to its weight. Foods with a high energy density confuse the brain's control systems for appetite, which are based solely on portion size.

2. British researchers from the Medical Research Council Human Nutrition Center and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have determined that repeated eating at McDonald's or KFC or Burger King, people are more likely to gain weight and become obese. This is because fast food not only contains many more calories than traditional food, but also is more likely to undermine normal appetite control systems.

3. By eating a Big Mac and fries, the body consumes almost twice as many calories as you would if you ate the same weight of pasta and salad. Fast Food restaurants feed the obesity epidemic by getting people to eat many more calories than they need through persistent advertising.

4. McDonald's, KFC, and Burger King menu items using nutritional data from the fast food restaurants' Web sites, found that when we eat high energy density foods, we don't reduce the portion size so we get a lot more calories than we need. Our current society possesses a weak innate ability to recognize foods with a high energy density. Food intake is assessed by the size of the portion, yet a fast food meal contains many more calories than a similar sized portion of a healthy meal. The conclusion is we are all being fooled into eating too much food.

5. People get fat eating regular portion sizes, but since the food has a high energy density, people gain weight. In evolutionary terms, the human appetite was designed for low energy density foods. In other parts of the world where these foods are still the dietary staples, obesity is virtually non existent. Our bodies were never designed to cope with the high energy dense foods consumed in the West. That is a major reason why fast food in contributing to the major rise in obesity.

6. Another fact is that fast food may speed up people's risk of clogged arteries that can lead to heart attacks. Researchers at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Francisco have demonstrated that a certain type of fat, called oxidized fat, can accelerate the buildup of plaque in arteries. And many types of fast food such as hamburgers, pizza and French fries are loaded with oxidized fat. The conclusion is fast food meals are high in saturated fat and low quality carbohydrates, white bread and lots of soda. Our bodies require fiber and more healthful types of fats. Fast food represents a dietary pattern that is the opposite of what is recommended for a healthy body.
Fast Food Statistics

Can Fast Food Be Healthy?

Can Fast Food Be Healthy?
Fast Food Statistics
It is possible for people to make healthy food choices even if they only have a short time in which to prepare their meals. The first thing to realize is that it is often that healthy choices do not always mean a need for two-hour meals. A person can choose healthy foods that are quick and easy to prepare at home or to pickup from a takeout place. Cities often provide restaurant guides in their telephone books that display full-page menus indicating what a particular restaurant or drive-thru offers. Many of these food vendors now include healthy alternatives to their usual fast-food selection.

At places like McDonald's and Hardee's, it is possible to find consumers who are concerned about their carbohydrate consumption. This has prompted the restaurants to provide other options in their hamburger choices. Hamburgers can be ordered without the bun, for example, and fruit and yogurt are included on the menu along with fresh salads. Many restaurants provide salad choices either as side orders or as complete meals. Often, a salad of fresh vegetables with chopped ham, roast beef or chicken is more attractive than regular menu items. Salads are especially appealing in the summer months because they are lighter on the digestive system.

Restaurants that feature foods in season cultivated by local farmers offer very healthy and affordable choices. Some of these kinds of restaurants will create their own recipes for healthy food options. This provides the consumer with a totally new choice and encourages them to visit the restaurant again.

If home preparation of food is preferred, the options for healthy choices increase. Visiting a local grocery store or supermarket emphasizes the number of healthy choices that are available. Fresh fruits and vegetables are more varied than ever before due to improvements in transportation and preservation methods. All types of cuisine can be prepared quickly because of the choices of fresh goods rather than frozen foods. There are numerous choices among frozen foods as well. The demand for healthy frozen dinners and other meals has increased along with demands for more variety in frozen food offerings. Any frozen food aisle in any supermarket will show as many healthy food options and poor choices. The decision is up to the individual.

People can either choose to eat a healthy diet or an unhealthy one. Time and availability of healthy choices are no longer problems for a person who is trying to eat better and healthier foods.
Fast Food Statistics

Fast Food Families: Why You Can’t Afford the Drive Thru

Fast Food Families: Why You Can’t Afford the Drive Thru
Fast Food Statistics
It’s a question that makes most moms squirm. What’s for dinner? Unfortunately, many times in desperation the answer is found at the nearest drive thru. Today’s average American eats 4 or more meals away from home each week. Fast food is no longer a treat for many families. It’s a habit that comes with a big price tag not listed on any value menu.

Consider the mom who’s trying to lose weight. She should be eating 1,800 calories or less per day. If she orders a hamburger, small French fries and small soda at the neighborhood drive thru, she’s just spent 1000 calories on lunch. Not to mention the terrible nutritional value of those calories. It’s a very high price to pay for convenience.

Here’s a frightening study. Researchers found that every day, nearly one-third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely packs on about six extra pounds per child every year. Billions of dollars are spent every year on fast food advertising directed at kids. No wonder America’s kids are wrestling with obesity in alarming numbers.

So what can you do to break the cycle of unhealthy fast food consumption for yourself and your kids before it’s too late?

1. Reduce the number of times you eat fast food. If you currently eat fast food once a week, then make it your goal to go for two weeks before hitting the drive thru again. Over time, wean yourself away from fast food restaurants. Reserve trips to McDonald’s or Burger King for occasional meetings with friends.

2. Find other convenient alternatives for meals. Making sandwiches with sliced turkey breast and whole wheat bread with ready-made salad makes an easy meal that’s more nutritious than any value meal. Buy a rotisserie chicken or other ready-to-eat options at a grocery store instead of choosing fast food. If you dread doing the dishes, why not use paper plates?

3. Watch Super Size Me. You will be astounded by this documentary about the fast food industry. Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock eats only McDonald’s for thirty days straight. You’ll see what happens to his body in just one month. Believe me, you won’t look at a cheeseburger and fries in the same way ever again. This captivating Sundance award-winning feature reveals how we as a nation are eating ourselves to death.

4. Check the nutritional facts on the menu items you order. What fast food place do you frequent most often? What do you usually get? Go online and look for "nutritional facts" on that restaurant’s website. You may be shocked to discover the bacon double cheeseburger you love is a whopping 900 calories. If you have to go to a fast food restaurant to meet a friend or something, do your homework first. Order the least caloric and damaging item on the menu. It’s usually a grilled chicken sandwich, chili, salad with dressing on the side, or a fruit cup.

When your kids ask what’s for dinner, don’t automatically make a beeline for the nearest drive thru. One of the main reasons for the rapid increase in the rate of obesity is fast food. It is just because of unhealthy materials used to increase the taste and attract customers to these food items. They contain high amounts of highly refined carbohydrates, saturated fats, sugars and sodium. They also have very high calorific value and are devoid of all the vital nutrients which play significant roles in the metabolism. High levels of carbohydrates raise the sugar level in the blood, as a result, the liver produce more insulin. High levels of insulin increase the amounts of fat depositions in the body. In this way, fastfood leads to obesity.

Obesity due to fastfood is a major risk factor of ten very serious diseases and health problems. However, it seems wherever America's fast food chains go, waistlines inevitably start expanding.

The United States has the highest obesity rate of any industrialized nation. More than half of all American adults and about one-quarter of all American children are now obese or overweight. Those proportions have soared during the last few decades, along with the consumption of fast food, with the rate of obesity among US children twice as high as in the late 1970s.

An obese person is someone with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Today about 44 million American adults are obese and an additional 6 million are super-obese i.e. they weigh about a hundred pounds more than they should. Schlosser comments that "No other nation in history has gotten so fat so fast". In simple terms, when people eat more and move less, they get fat. In the US, people have become increasingly sedentary and consume more restaurant meals,
including fast food. As people eat more food outside the home, they consume more calories, less fiber and more fat.

"The obesity epidemic that began in the US during the late 1970s is now spreading to the rest of the world, with fast food as one of its vectors. To demonstrate this claim, Schlosser includes the following information:

* Between 1984-1993, the number of fast food restaurants in the UK roughly doubled - and so did the obesity rate among adults. The British now eat more fast food than any other nationality in Western Europe. They also have the highest obesity rate.
* In Japan, eating hamburgers and french fries has made people fatter. The nation's traditional diet of rice, fish, vegetables and soy products was one of the healthiest in the world. And yet, according to Schlosser, the Japanese are rapidly abandoning this diet. The arrival of McDonald's in 1971 accelerated the nation's eating habits towards an increase in red meat consumption. During the 1980s, the sale of fast food in Japan more than doubled, and the rate of obesity amongst children also doubled.

Today, about 1/3 of all Japanese men in their 30s - members of the nation's first generation raised on Happy Meals and "Bi-gu Ma-kus" - are overweight, increasing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and breast cancer (the principal 'diseases of affluence').
Fast food statistics...
how-many-people-eat-fast-food.

Marketing Fast Food

Marketing Fast Food

Schlosser takes a critical look at what he claims is a deliberate targeting of children by fast food and soft drinks companies. He describes an explosion in advertising to children that occurred in
the 1980s. Schlosser describes how many working parents felt guilty about spending less time with their kids, and started to spend more money on them. One marketing expert has called the 1980s "the decade of the child consumer." The majority of advertising directed at children today aims to achieve the immediate goal of a purchase. As one marketer explained in Selling to Kids, "It's not just getting kids to whine, it's giving them a specific reason to ask for a product." The sociologist Vance Packard described children as "surrogate salesmen" who had to persuade other people, usually their parents, to buy what they wanted. The aim of children's advertising, as Schlosser points out, is straight forward: get kids to nag their parents for consumer goods.

This competition for young customers has led fast food chains to form marketing partnerships with toy companies, sports leagues and Hollywood studios. McDonald's has staged promotions with the NBA and the Olympics. Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC signed a three year deal with the NCAA. Burger King, Nickelodeon, McDonald's and the Fox Kids Network have formed partnerships that mix advertisements for fast food with children's entertainment. Burger King has sold chicken nuggets shaped like Teletubbies.

Soft drinks companies
The three largest US soft drinks companies, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Cadbury-Schweppes spend large sums including on school funding programmes to increase the amount of their products consumed by American children. Americans drink soft drinks at an annual rate of about 56 gallons per person (approx. 600 twelve ounce cans of soda).
Coca-Cola has set its goal of raising this consumption of its products by at least 25%. As the adult market is stagnant, selling more soft drinks to children has become the easiest way to meet
sales projections." Influencing elementary school students is very important to soft drinks marketers," an article in the Jan. 1999 issue of Beverage Industry explained, "because children are still establishing their tastes and habits ... eight year olds are considered ideal customers as they have about sixty-five years of purchasing in front of them. "Entering the schools makes perfect sense," the trade journal concludes."

"Liquid Candy" report
A 1999 study by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest describes how US children are affected by the beverage industry.

Some of the main points are:
* In 1978, the typical teenage boy in the US drank about seven ounces of soft drinks daily. Today he drinks nearly three times that amount, deriving 9% of his daily calorific intake from soft drinks.
* Soft drinks consumption amongst teenage girls has doubled within the same period, reaching an average of 12oz. a day.
* A significant number of boys are now drinking five or more cans of soft drinks a day - each can contains the equivalent of about 10 teaspoons of sugar.
* Soft drinks like Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew and Dr Pepper provide empty calories and have replaced far more nutritious beverages in the American diet. Excessive soft drinks consumption in childhood can lead to calcium deficiency and a great likelihood of bone fractures.
* 20 years ago, US teenage boys drank twice as much milk as soft drinks; now they drink twice as many soft drinks as milk.
* About one-fifth of the US's 1 and 2 year olds now drink soft drinks. Michael Jacobson, the report's author, describes the marketing practice of licensing manufacturers' logos to Munchkin
Bottling Inc., a major manufacturer of baby bottles. A 1997 study, published in the Journal of Dentistry for Children, found that many infants were being fed soft drinks in those bottles.

The fast food chains run advertisements on Channel One, the commercial television network whose programming is shown in classrooms in almost every school, to eight million US middle,
junior and high school students. Schlosser further points out that the chains promote their products by selling school lunches, accepting a lower profit margin in order to create brand loyalty.

* At least twenty school districts in the US have their own Subway franchises; an additional fifteen hundred districts have Subway contracts; and nine operate Subway sandwich carts.

* Taco Bell sells products in about 4,500 school cafeterias.
Pizza Hut, Domino's Pizza and McDonald's are now selling food in US schools. The American School Food Service estimates that about 30% of the public high schools in the US offer branded fast food.

* Elementary schools in Fort Collins, Colorado now serve food from Pizza Hut, McDonald's and Subway on special lunch days. "We try to be more like the fast food places where these kids are hanging out" a Colorado school administrator told the Denver Post. "We want kids to think school lunch is a cool thing, the cafeteria a cool place, that we're with it."

Global expansion

In the United States, the fast food companies have targeted their worldwide advertising and promotion at a group of consumers with fewest attachments to tradition: young children.

It reveals that:

* In Australia, where the number of fast food restaurants roughly tripled during the 1990s, a survey found that half of the nation's 9 and 10 year olds thought that Ronald McDonald knew what kids should eat.

* At a primary school in Beijing, it was found that all of the children recognised the image of Ronald McDonald, saying that '... he understood children's hearts'. Coca-Cola is now the favourite
drink amongst Chinese children, and McDonald's serves their favourite food.

* Germany is now one of McDonald's most profitable overseas markets, with more than a thousand restaurants. "The Golden Arches have become so commonplace in Germany that they seem almost invisible," Schlosser notes. McDonald's Deutschland has put restaurants in new Wal-Mart stores because the latter expects the kiddie factor to create an upsurge in customers.
Fastfood statistics...
fast-food-statistics-and-obesity

Growth of the fast food industry

Growth of the fast food industry

Fastfood Statistics..

The fast food industry is being driven by fundamental changes in American society. Since the 1970s there has been a steady decline in the hourly wage (adjusted for inflation) of the average US worker. Additionally more and more American mothers were working outside the home. In 1975, about 1/3 of US mothers with young children held jobs. That ratio has risen to 2/3 at the beginning of the 21st century. A generation ago, three-quarters of the money used to buy food in the US was spent to prepare meals at home. Today, about half of that same money is spent in restaurants - mainly fast food restaurants. In 1968, McDonald's had 1,000 restaurants - today it has about 30,000, and 2,000 new ones are opening each year.

McDonald's Corporation:

- an estimated one in every ten workers in the US has, at some point worked at a McDonald's restaurant.
- it is the nation's largest purchaser of beef, pork and potatoes and largest of chicken (KFC is number two);
- it has replaced Coca Cola as the world's most famous brand, but serves it in its establishments;
- it operates more playgrounds - designed to attract children and their parents to its restaurants - than any other private entity in the US;
- the Golden Arches are now more widely recognized than the Christian cross.
- Ronald McDonald is more widely recognized by American children than Jesus.

Schlosser quotes of "the McDonaldization of America": He viewed the emerging fast food industry as a threat to independent business, as a step toward a food economy dominated by giant corporations, and as a homogenizing influence on American life. In Eat Your Heart Out
(1975), he argued that "bigger is not better". Much of what Hightower feared has become a reality. He believes that the centralized purchasing decisions of the large restaurant chains e.g.
McDonald's, KFC, Burger King and Pizza Hut now have an unprecedented degree of power over the nation's food supply, as well as "wiping out small businesses, obliterating regional differences, and spreading identical stores throughout the country like a self-replicating code.
Fastfood statistics...
effects-of-fast-food.

Fast Food And Obesity Statistics

Fast Food And Obesity Statistics

When looking at fast food statistics, there are some fascinating conclusions to be drawn. Consumption of fast food by children has increased dramatically since the 1970’s - partly due to the fact that there are now upwards of 4 times as many outlets in existence.

Furthermore, massive advertising campaigns, cleverly aimed at children, obviously do a very good job and succeed in their objective. Some startling fast food and obesity statistics suggest that children now get 10% of their total energy intake from fast foods! In addition, fast food encompasses virtually every segment of society, including public schools and hospitals, and this is another of the fast food statistics that is linked to the current rise in of childhood and adolescent obesity. Another of the fast food and obesity statistics focuses on the workforce at fast food restaurants. As they are largely composed of adolescents who may receive discounted or free food as part of their remuneration package, is it little wonder that the problem continues to grow.

There are several consideration in studies of fast food statistics. Those that are inherent in fast foods are known to cause excessive weight gains, for example: huge portion sizes and high energy density; palatability (appealing to rudimentary taste preferences for fats, sugar, and salt); plus high content of saturated and trans fats and low fibre content. A supplementary problem when analysing fast food and obesity statistics is that fast food may compromise diet quality by displacing more healthy foodstuff. In particular, research of fast food and obesity statistics has identified that children's odds of becoming obese are heightened if milk is replaced with sugar-sweetened soft drinks in daily diets. A further explanation in the fast food statistics is the significant and totally relevant trend of increased availability of fast food in school cafeterias, couple that with improved spending power of present day children and there lies a potential obesity time-bomb!

Fast Food And Obesity Statistics

Fast Food And Obesity Statistics

When looking at fast food statistics, there are some fascinating conclusions to be drawn. Beware.....

The Facts About Fast Food And Your Weight!

The Facts About Fast Food And Your Weight!

“Temple University researchers interviewed 12,666 people about their dietary habits.
Here’s what they found about the weighty cost of a fast food feeding:

Those who ate 1 fast food meal per week:

Weighed 1.4 more pounds compared with abstainers

Ate 2 fast food meals per week:

Weighed 2.8 more pounds compared with abstainers

Ate 3 fast food meals per week:

Weighed 4 more pounds compared with abstainers

41%

Would like to see nutritional information printed on fast food menus.

50%

Would likely order healthy items if part of a value/combo meal. To begin fast-food with, the just-released figures are for the year 2000 and have little relevance to 2007.

The insinuation of the press release is that eating at restaurants is either harmful to your health or a sign of stupidity, or both. Using statistics to lie is an art form and something consumers should learn to see through.

Times are changing and everyone is interested in any product that is faster, smaller and cheaper. Not only with hamburgers, but computers and cell phones, too. Any of these products are harmful to your health if not used in moderation.

To say in a headline of fast food statistics that Hawaii leads the nation in the consumption of “fast food” is misleading.
It is probably accurate to say we lead the nation in taxes and gas prices, but there is a good reason for that, although no one ever makes an effort to explain why the cost of living is so high in Hawaii and why the gas prices seem to be listening to a different drummer.

The fast-food industry in Hawaii is a very important part of our economy. They also are wonderful corporate citizens and provide a lot of employment opportunities for every segment of the community. They easily employ more physically challenged people, senior citizens and young people than any other industry in Hawaii, not to mention all of the generous donations to local charities. Our fast food industry’s civic virtue is unimpeachable.

Hawaii is in a hurry to go the beach, go shopping, camping and watch their children participate in school activities. Takeout plate lunches, lunch wagons bringing food to job sites - you name it - Hawaii is on the move.
One last thing about lying with statistics. There’s the issue about cost when it comes to comparing Vermont with Hawaii. I’m not sure who’s interested in how many hamburgers the people in Vermont buy; however, the cost of producing a hamburger is a lot cheaper there
than producing one in Hawaii. The same is true for pizza.

The cost of living in Vermont is so much lower than Hawaii that you could probably get twice as many hamburgers for half the money. The census figures, if reported correctly, were about the cost of living in Hawaii compared to Vermont. It does not mean there is something wrong with our fast-food industry or that the residents of Vermont are more health-conscious or eat better than we do.
Fast food statistics...

Fast Food Statistics

Fast Food Statistics

Unhealthy eating and inactivity account for more deaths than alcohol, illicit use of drugs, sexual behavior, and firearms combined all together.

Consumption of fast food by children has increased dramatically since 1982, partly due to the fact that the amount consumers spent at fast food outlets grew at an annual rate of 6.8 percent, compared with 4.7 percent growth in table service restaurant expenditures.

In North Carolina, unhealthy eating and physical inactivity cost the state an estimated $57 billion annually in lost workdays, avoidable medical expenses and. workers compensation claims.

Growth in fast food affects many agricultural industries. For example, Pizza Hut uses approximately :

2.5 percent of all the milk produced each year,

that means over 3.2 billion pounds) to meet its annual cheese requirements. When Stuffed Crust Pizza was introduced in 1995, Pizza Hut required approximately:

17.5 million pounds of string cheese, almost 50 percent of the total US production at that time.

McDonald’s 1996 beef usage exceeded 644 million pounds, and potato usage was about 1.35 billion pounds, approximately 2.5 and 3.2 percent of total US production, respectively. The dominant form of off-premise dining in the foodservice industry is carryout, but the drive-thru is especially important in fast food. Company records show that about :

60 percent of the sales at Burger King and

54 percent at McDonald’s

are made at the drive-thru.

Temple University made a research and interviewed 12,666 people about their dietary habits. These are the fastfood statistics of the weighty costs of a drive-thru feeding:

1 fast food meal / week: 1.4 more pounds compared with abstainers

2 fast food meals / week: 2.8 more pounds compared with abstainers

3 fast food meals / week: 4 more pounds compared with abstainers
